The Fire That Nearly Was

Subtitle: How a 40mph fire hazard turned into the Panther — and why I’ll never build like that again.

🔥 I Didn’t Start With a New Bike

The first build — the Ninja — was a rust bucket I’d left chained up outside for over five years. Exposed to the rain, wind, snow — the lot. It was seized solid, covered in moss, and had tyres so flat they cracked when I touched them.

But I brought it back. Bit of elbow grease. New cables. Got it rolling.

Then I bolted on a 1500W rear hub motor and thought, “Let’s see what it can do.”

⚠️ From Scrap to 40mph Fire Hazard

First controller? 26A.
It lasted less than a week before it fried.

Second one? 40A. That’s when it got stupid.
It took the bike up to 40mph.

  Description

40mph… on a bike that had V-brakes and tyres from the last decade.     It was like trying to stop a freight train with a stick.

Thin wheels. Old bearings. A frame that had been rusting for years.
And I was holding on like it was fine.

💥 The Warning I Didn’t Ignore

The controller was stuffed in a cloth bag under the seat — cheap, unventilated, and cooking itself before the ride even started.

I even filmed myself saying:
“This controller’s gonna get hot in that bag… could be a fire risk.”

Ten minutes into the ride, it was more than a risk.
The throttle was glitching. The wires were melting. Smoke was seeping out the top.

If I’d parked the bike and walked inside, I’d have come back to a full-blown fire.

🔄 That Was the Line

That moment wasn’t about fear — it was about clarity.

I saw what would happen if someone less experienced built the same way.   A teenager. A commuter. Someone chasing TikTok likes.

These bikes aren’t toys.     At 40mph, with lithium batteries and no regulation, they’re a death trap waiting to happen.

So I stripped it all back and started again.

🐾 Warrior Cycles Was Born

The Panther is what came next.

  • 4-inch fat tyres for real grip and stopping power
  •
  • Hydraulic disc brakes — not V-brakes
  •
  • VESC-based controller — rock solid, configurable, safe
  •
  • Permanent 28mph limit — no toggles, no “just bump it up”

I built the Panther to be bulletproof.   Something that could pass DVSA inspection and still give you that raw e-bike grin.

🚨 This Isn’t Just My Story

Almost half of all property fires linked to e-bikes or scooters in the UK come down to the same problem I had — cheap parts, bad setups, and corners cut.

No crash. No impact. Just heat, poor wiring, and no plan B.

The Ninja nearly went up.     The next one might take a flat with it.

🛠 What’s Next

The Panther is now legal. Fast. Safe. Inspected.

The Ninja? It’s going back to the drawing board — built the way it should’ve been from the start.

Because this isn’t just a project. It’s a mission.
